Hospital Trip....
Thursday: May 22, 2014
I went to bed the night before with severe lower back pain after having "uncomfortable" pain for a few days. When I woke up I could feel severe pain specifically in my right kidney. The same place I've felt pain when having kidney stones in 8th grade for the first time then again a year later. I had an ultrasound appointment scheduled for 10:20 that morning so I thought it be best to wait for that, to make sure the baby is okay then go from there. Well I was 5-8 minutes late for my appointment and lost my spot. I rescheduled for the next Tuesday. As soon as we left there we got food at sonic and I called my doctor's office. (the ultrasound was offsite) A nurse I spoke to on behalf of my own listened to my symptoms from the night before and that morning and requested me to go in to Labor and Delivery at Centennial Hills Hospital (the hospital I plan to deliver at) and check it out. I was having certain symptoms that also sounded like a UTI, pain during or after urination, urinating often, and pain in my right kidney. We got to labor and delivery within 10-15 minutes since we were driving home when I called and the hospital is right down the street. We sat in the waiting room in Labor and Delivery for over 5 hours before being called back and checked out. They checked the baby, which is all they ever do, and since they found the baby was fine I wasn't having contractions they sent me down to the emergency room. I would have gone to the emergency room first except since I'm pregnant they would have sent me up there before treating me at all anyway.
Down in the emergency they ran a urine test and did find that I have a UTI and after an ultrasound on my kidney they also found very evident looking kidney stones. Since a cat scan is the only SURE was to find out they couldn't be 100% because that is not something healthy for the baby and I wouldn't let them even if the doctor wanted to but he never did. So they gave me an antibiotic through an IV and then sent me home with a prescription for an antibiotic and a pain reliever. The doctor also asked that I come back in 24 hours to check my vitals and to make sure everything is fine and should I have worsening or new symptoms, vomiting, vaginal bleeding, or worsening pain to come back before that. He informed me that since I do have kidney stones it could make the UTI slower to heal depending on how big they are and how quickly they pass. He also informed me that the reason he wanted me to come back is because if this infection worsens at all it worsens very quickly and very badly and could lead to death for me or the baby. If the infection were to worsen to the symptoms of a kidney infection I would have been hospitalized for monitoring until treated. I didn't realize how weird his request was until I got back the next night for my 24 hour check up and everyone looked at me like I was crazy. Luckily a nurse that was also on duty the night before, since the doctor who requested it wasn't, she remembered me and had them pull up the notes that said exactly what I was saying and that I wasn't crazy. It was still weird to them that he had requested it. Nonetheless they took me back, checked my vitals, a doctor came to visit with me for just a second (of course everyone I encountered laughed at/with me). I was in and out in a matter of 20-30 minutes considering I was fine and none of my symptoms had worsened. The bad part, which was really irritating, was that I was charged another co-pay for that visit the same as when I was there for 9 hours. ANNOYING!
BUT. A little over 2 weeks later I am feeling much better. My symptoms from my UTI have been gone for almost a week and the pain has lessened. I have a feeling I still have stoned because I am still in some pain but nothing that is bad enough that I can't do anything. So I am pushing forward and hope they pass, because that's all they CAN do, which is the worst part of kidney stones...for now I am living and LOVING being pregnant all that I can so I am not worried about it!
